How should acne applications be used?

Topical treatments should be applied to clean skin. If the skin is moist the irritant effect of topicals will be enhanced so it is probably best, if possible, to wait ten or fifteen minutes after washing before applying your lotions or gels, or to ensure at least that you have dried your skin thoroughly. It is certainly advisable to wait about ten minutes after washing before applying tretinoin. It is also advisable to apply it at least half an hour before going to bed to minimise spreading to the corners of the mouth and eyelids, which are more easily irritated. Bed-time is usually a good time to apply any topical treatment designed to be used only once daily. It is also the best time to apply tretinoin because of its sun sensitising potential. Most topical preparations are not highly visible on the skin, so can be worn during the day and applied under make-up.

Make-up and moisturisers in acne

Most young acne suffers have excessively oily skin, making the routine use of moisturisers unnecessary. Dryness and irritation should not be a problem if you start with lower strengths of topicals and build up to greater strengths, allowing the skin to adjust gradually. Sometimes alternateday treatments are appropriate if your skin is very sensitive.

Unfortunately, when dryness and irritation from topical treatments become a problem, some women undo all the good work by using the wrong types of moisturiser. Oily moisturisers only aggravate acne by clogging pores and encouraging blackhead formation. Oil-free moisturisers can be used if dry skin becomes a problem. Likewise oil-free foundations should be used. Excellent oil-free make-ups are available which are suitable for acne patients and give good matt coverage.

Tretinoin for Acne

Vitamin A acid or tretinoin, available in cream, gel or liquid form, can help acne patients but it may be difficult to tolerate because of its irritating effect.

“Like benzoyl peroxide, vitamin A acid is an aggressive irritant the benefits of which are not readily noticeable. In fact, during the first few weeks of therapy, the rapidly drying, peeling, itching pimples may actually appear worse than ever. The skin will be rough, red and flaky and a decidedly unattractive crop of lesions will bloom quite prolifically for a while,” said Dr. Frederic Haberman, a dermatologist at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, in Your Skin; A Dermatologist’s Guide to A Lifetime of Beauty and Health.

While this may be enough reason to discontinue using the drug, Consumer Guide’s Prescription Drugs said you should go on with the treatment since this is a normal side effect of teitinoin.

“The acne may seem worse after several weeks of treatment but this is because the drying and peeling action of the acid has uncovered hidden comedos (blackheads). Two or three months may be required, after which dramatic improvement can be expected,” explained Kurt Butler and Dr. Lynn Rayner of the John A. Burns School of Medicine, University of Hawaii, in The Best Medicine.

As for side effects, inform your doctor about blistering, crusting, severe redness and burning, swelling, or marked darkening or lightening of the skin. The safe use of this drug in pregnancy has not been established.

To lessen irritation, the use of a sunscreen is advised since tretinoin increases one’s susceptibility to sunburn and possibly skin cancer. Other studies, however, say otherwise.

“The problem with tretinoin is that it often causes irritation and redness. It doesn’t have great patient acceptability because of that. What’s funny is that chronic use of tretinoin is also said to reduce the incidence of skin cancer so it’s like a twin-edged sword. But I would say that the use of tretinoin has decreased dramatically over the last 10 years. The type of acne that seems to respond well to it is the one mainly with blackheads and whiteheads$ not inflammatory acne which is characterized by big red pimples,” said Dr. Peter W. Gould, former president of the New Zealand Dermatological Society.

Tetracycline, an oral antibiotic, which is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections, is also prescribed for moderate forms of acne. This prescription drug inhibits the growth of bacteria which are sometimes responsible for the development of acne lesions.

“Tetracycline (one gram) daily is usually required and has to be continued for at least six months for maximum benefit. Up to 70 percent of patients may be expected to respond with useful reduction of inflammation. However, complete clearance of lesions cannot be expected and improvement is delayed for about a month after treatment begins,”explained Dr. John Wishart of the Department of Dermatology, Auckland Hospital in New Zealand.

One drawback is that tetracycline does not work as fast as topical antibiotics and other peeling agents we discussed earlier. Because of this, the patient must continue taking them for extended periods of time and is more likely to experience their side effects.

“In general, we move to topical stuff because a lot of people may have to take oral antibiotics for two years and they should be cautious about their side effects. Some people can’t take them at all. With tetracycline, they might become sensitive to the sun or suffer from gastric irritation or vaginal thrush,” according to Gould. (Next: Side effects of oral antibiotics.)

Best Acne Products And Acne Solutions - Finally, the Truth!

Article after article; commercial after commercial; they fill up our airwaves and our online mailbox, all trying to sell us the best acne products and acne solutions. But do they really work? What is the total truth about all of the hype behind so many suggestions? Finally, here are your answers.

What is interesting is that people spend millions of dollars every year trying and testing the many different treatments on the market. Out of all of them, we have found that what the many celebrities say is actually true. Proactiv by far works as well or better than other over the counter acne medications. It really does what it says it will do. And so many stars have endorsed it, and some without pay, that we have included it as one of the best acne products and a big step toward finding your acne solutions.

But other than this product, what can you do yourself, at home, that will clear up your acne condition? This is really a very easy thing, but you have to be diligent to do this every day:

• Wash your face at least two times a day and more if you have oily skin.

• Wash your hair frequently and keep it off your face.

• Wash your hands many times during the day just in case you should inadvertently touch your face.

• Study up on what so many celebrities agree on - try Proactiv. They have a money back guarantee. You literally have nothing to lose and more than likely you will have found a product which is a part of your acne solutions because we feel it is one of the best acne products.

• Whether you use our recommendation or not, you should always try to keep a mildly acid pH on your skin. This will create an environment on your skin which will not be good for the proliferation of bacteria. You could take an oral medication which will also do this, but many times there are side effects to other areas of your health so it just is not worth it.

• Do not use on your face or in your diet: coconut oil, cocoa butter and wheat germ oil. They plug up your pores either on the outside, if applied directly to the skin or on the inside when taken internally. Also, be careful with salt and sugar.

• Exfoliate with a gentle anti-acne, non-oily exfoliate. This cleans out the hair follicles. You can look for the best acne products all day long, and if you do not do this, they will not work as well. Make exfoliating a big part of your acne solutions.

Of course I’m sure you’ve heard all of those suggestions before. And let me add, I’m sure that you’ve heard to get more sleep, don’t eat junk food, exercise and on and on and on. But most people don’t take seriously that you can do so much yourself, if you would really take to heart what was mentioned here. If you do them all, you will alleviate this acne condition you are dealing with for good. Honestly, you can find the best acne products and if you don’t change a few very important lifestyle changes, the acne condition will return. Make sure that part of your acne solutions, you follow the above suggestions. And try Proactiv. The money back guarantee is amazing and the company is honest about it. You have nothing to lose.

Vitamin for Acne

Some of the best supplements for treating acne are vitamins. These are essential nutrients that the body must have from external sources, i.e. food or supplements, in order to operate efficiently. Here is a quick summary of what your body needs in order to stay acne free…

Beta Carotene - Vitamin A

Beta carotene is an antioxidant that is the precursor to vitamin A, known to effectively help clear acne. Beta carotene is sourced from vegetables and can be taken as a supplement. The strong acne drug accutane is derived from vitamin a, yet has negative side effects. Beta carotene is the natural source of vitamin a, and is absorbed better than regular vitamin a.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant that is proven to maintain optimal skin health by destroying free radicals in cells. It also has a proven healing action on acne scars. As vitamin e is fat soluble, you do need some fat in your diet to absorb the nutrient. This means you should take vitamin e with your main evening meal, which generally contains the most fat.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C improves the action of vitamin e and beta carotene, and is also an antioxidant, although this time is water soluble. Vitamin C promotes properly hydrated skin and clean cells free of damaging agents that cause acne at the cellular level. Chromium can improve the action of vitamin c so is worth taking with the vitamin c for enhanced performance.

If you wanted to know what is the best vitamin for acne, then these three; vitamin a, vitamin e and vitamin c is your answer.

Acne Quackery

Victims of acne need not endure the psychological distress caused by the condition. Although acne may be difficult to cure and recurrence is common, a good dermatologist can ease the pain of the acne years with today’s wonder drugs.

“Acne is an important dermatological problem of the young; 80 percent of the population between 10 and 30 years, may show some signs of acne and about seven percent of all new dermatological consultations are for acne. Acne tends to be more severe in males. Apart from pain, disfigurement and scarring, it has marked psychological effects. Indeed, what might be a few minor lesions to a laborer could be disastrous to a model or air hostess. The disease occurs at a vulnerable time for adolescents and there could be nothing more destructive than for the doctor to assure the patient that ‘you will grow out of it; I wouldn’t worry about it,’” according to Dr. John M. Wishart of the Department of Dermatology of the Auckland Hospital in New Zealand.

“The last few years have seen a number of extremely effective agents become available for the treatment of acne. It may be said quite confidently that the worst aspects of acne need no longer be suffered and that it is negligent to do so. Although it is difficult to prove the assertion, dermatologists have a strong feeling that early and tho¬rough treatment of the condition may lessen complications of later pain and scarring,” Wishart added.

But before you rush to the drugstore, a word of warning. Desperate consumers are the favorite targets of quacks and acne has its own share of quackery. Be wary of people who promise instant cures. There is no fast way out of acne. Depending on your condition, Wishart said it may take about a month of treatment before results are visible. And even with treatment, relapses are common.

“To avoid acne, you have to choose your ancestors because acne is to a large degree inherited. And if you’ve got bad acne in your family, the chances of you getting it are quite high,” explained Dr. Peter W. Gould, former president of the New Zealand Dermatological Society.

What are some of the quack cures for acne? A popular one is vitamin A megadoses. While retinoids or vitamin A derivatives have found their greatest use in dermatology, particularly in the treatment of acne, vitamin A supplements are both ineffective and hazardous. This was established in 1979 by the Food and Drug Administration Advisory Panel on Vitamins and Mineral Drug Products for Over-the-Counter Human Use.

“Taking large doses of vitamin A, which is necessary for healthy skin, at one time was thought to be a way to reduce acne. Megadoses of vitamin A, however, have never proved to be effective in treating most cases of acne. In fact, excess amounts of this fat-soluble vitamin can cause a variety of health problems,” said Dr. Susan Baker of the Boston Children’s Hospital in Parents’ Guide to Nutrition.

Dr. Myron Winick, director of the Institute of Human Nutrition, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, said some of the side effects of too much vitamin A are headache, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision and brain damage.

“While vitamin A helps acne, the doses required are dangerous to your liver and eyes. That’s why other vitamin A derivatives were developed which are more effective but less toxic. The problem is, if you get people to buy vitamin A over-the-counter, they tend to overdo it and take too much,” added Gould, a member of the British Association of Dermatology. (Next: Other unproven acne remedies.)

Side Effects Of Acne Drugs

Benzoyl peroxide is another safe and effective topical agent for the early treatment of acne. Available in varying strengths, this chemical works by penetrating into the oil glands of the skin and killing bacteria responsible for acne inflammation. By peeling the skin, benzoyl peroxide also prevents new pimples from forming.

“Always apply it to thoroughly dry skin and carefully avoid the eyes, mouth and nostrils. Start with a five percent gel once a day, then twice a day, then try a 10 percent gel. If your skin becomes irritated, go back to the five percent. The first week of use may result in a worsening condition, so be patient,” said Kurt Butler and Dr. Lynn Rayner of the John A. Burns School of Medicine, University of Hawaii, in The Best Medicine.

“Beware of too much burning and peeling; prolonged discomfort can aggravate your case and discourage you from following through. However, some irritation, tightness and dryness is a sign that the product is doing its work. The idea is to expose and toughen the skin in gradual stages, to build up tolerance slowly,” added Dr. Frederic Haberman, a dermatologist at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, in Your Skin; A Dermatologist’s Guide to A Lifetime of Beauty and Health.

Like benzoyl peroxide, clindamycin works by suppressing the growth of bacteria. Because it contains alcohol, this topical antibiotic may irritate the skin and should be kept away from heat because the solution is flammable.

“Before applying topical clindamycin, wash the affected area thoroughly with a mild soap and warm water. Then rinse well and pat dry. To avoid skin irritation from the alcohol, wait at least 30 minutes after washing or shaving before applying this medication,” according to Consumer Guide’s Prescription Drugs. Results are visible in six to 12 weeks.

If there is no improvement, be sure to consult your doctor, especially if there are persistent or bothersome side effects. Clindamycin may cause diarrhea, dry skin, fatigue, headache, nausea, oily skin or stomach irritation but these should disappear as your body adjusts to the medication.

Major side effects are bloody or pus-containing diarrhea, increased urination, itching, sore throat, or swelling of the face. Although it appears to be safe, Consumer Guide said extensive studies in humans have not been conducted so be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant before using clindamycin.

“If you are using another topical medication as well as clindamycin, it is best to apply them at different times to increase their effectiveness and to reduce the chance of skin irritation,” Consumer Guide added. (Next: Tretinoin for acne.)

Why Choose Natural Skin Care Products for Acne?

May 4th, 2008 proactive acne Posted in Acne Cleanser, Acne Creams, acen solution, ache solutions, acme solution, acne gel, acne sollution, acne soluiton, acne solutin, back ache solutions, back acne solutions, best acne solutions, prescription acne, pro active acne, solution for acne, solutions for acne Comments Off

The reason why people choose natural skin care products for acne as opposed to those that are made of synthetic materials is often due to the fact that a lot of synthetic materials are known to cause more harm than good. There are a lot of natural skin care products for acne that people can choose from, and these are all made from natural ingredients that are less likely to cause allergic reactions or make a person’s skin break out. Natural skin care products for acne are often the most appropriate choice for those who have very sensitive skin that cannot withstand certain harsh chemicals used in some acne treatment products.

Finding natural skin care products for acne is not that hard to do as long as you know what kind of products you are looking for. The products that claim that they are natural skin care products for acne are often made of non-synthetic ingredients, and they are mostly herbal or botanical. These skin care products that are all natural are marketed in such a way that they will appeal to consumers and acne sufferers who need acne care solutions that do not contain synthetic ingredients that may cause damage to their skin.

Whether or not natural skin care products for acne are better than other kinds of acne treatment products depends on the formulation of the products and how closely the user follows the instructions of use. It is also advisable that a person suffering from acne do not try something that is not recommended by skin care experts or dermatologists since some products may be falsely marketed as effective acne treatment products.

Aside from acne treatment products that help people get rid of acne, there are also natural skin care products for acne prone individuals that help keep a person’s skin clean and healthy. Such products are effective in keeping breaks out at bay, and they are usually cleansing and toning products that are aimed at promoting healthy skin. There are a lot of products out there that are created for this purpose, but quite a number of them have certain components that can either cause or aggravate acne. This may be due to the clogging of the person’s pores or allergic reactions to one or two synthetic substances that are included in the formulation of these products. Natural skin care products for acne may still cause some of these reactions, but due to the fact that they contain more natural ingredients, they are less likely to do so than other non-natural skin products.
