Despite the fact that there are many effective over-the-counter treatments for mild to moderate cases of acne and prescription medicines for more severe acne, getting rid ot acne takes time and so, while the medication does its work, most people want to conceal their acne as much as possible.
Having said this, it can be argued that since this is a condition that affects about 85% of the population between the ages of about 12 and 24 you really shouldn’t worry about trying to cover it up at all since nearly all of us have to go through it. Nonetheless, you try telling that to a young person who is heading out on that all important first date.
Women tend to suffer more as, whether we like it or not, they tend to be judged more on their looks. However, they also have a ready-made answer in the form of makeup.
Normal makeup can lead to problems and, although it may well cover up your pimples, it can also aggravate the underlying condition. The answer here is therefore to purchase makeup that is specifically formulated for use with acne and this means makeup that is labeled as ‘non-comedogenic’. If that sounds like a strange term it is derived from the word ‘comedone’ which is the medical name for the blackheads and whiteheads accompanying certain mild forms of acne.
You should begin by looking for a concealer which can be dabbed onto your pimples with a disposable sponge. You need to be careful though in using a concealer and use just as much as you need and no more.
Following a concealer you need to move on to a foundation which is very good at blending the tones of your skin and again this has to be used sparingly but enough to achieve an even overall cover. You will find that foundation is not only excellent at covering your spots but, because it is less reflective than your skin itself, it also softens out the shadows and lessens the contrast that is frequently produced by the bumps which occur with acne.
Lastly, a light application of powder will also help to further blend color tones, lessen shadow and eliminate contrast.
So much for the women, but what about the men? There are two approaches here. First, you can follow the women and apply makeup and you will find that there is makeup available nowadays which is specifically formulated for use by men. If, however, you don not think that this is for you then a second approach is to buy one of the range of treatments that contain acne covering compounds to both help cure the condition and hide its appearance at the same time.
Of course it would be great if we had a proactive acne treatment which could get rid of acne fast but at present clearing acne is a somewhat lengthy process and so, until we have some products and treatments that get rid of acne fast, finding effective ways to conceal the condition will continue to be important for many sufferers.
