My very first experience of facial Skin spots occurred when I was just turning 13. As I approached puberty like a runaway train approaches a last stop station, almost overnight my complexion went from baby soft and clear to a pimple riddled landscape of erupting pustules and scab scarred nodules. To say the least I was horrified and ill prepared to deal with the spotty face that stared back at me from the mirror in the bathroom as over the last 13 years, I and the mirror had grown to like my face just the way it was.
I say this happened almost overnight although reality can become blurred when the memory is forced to reminisce so far back. In truth, this transition probably took place over a matter of months however the outcome has lasted with me for years.
Twenty five years on and I am still suffering from Skin spots.
There is some comfort, in puberty the eruptions were severe and the Acne attacked in force without so much as a thought to my confidence or mental capacity for coping with their persistent assaults. In adult hood my Skin spots are much less severe and they attack only when I am at my weakest point such as extreme bouts of stress or when I have put my body through some extreme form of exercise.
As I write this article I am currently training for a 10k challenge. Although I am capable of running short distances the challenge has meant that I train much harder and therefore I am running for much longer. What has this got to do with spots on the skin you might ask?
Well as I am running I am perspiring throughout the run and this sweat is sitting on my forehead for a considerable amount of time. It is a pointless activity to shower as soon as I get home (although I do feel much fresher) because the next day I break out in spots upon my forehead.
Maybe a sweatband you might say?
Surely a sweatband will solve the problem as it will absorb the sweat before it has chance to dry upon the skin?
The trouble is in my neck of he woods, running in itself attracts too much interest from the delinquent and ignorant adolescents that mingle on the street corners that I frequently pass whilst running. A runner with a sweatband on would stick out like a sore thumb and would be definitely targeted for some verbal abuse or at worst, half a brick in the back of the head.
No!
Only a brave (stupid) old soul would run with a sweat band on!!
If you have spots approaching forty then you might as well throw in the towel and gracefully accept that they are here to stay. Or you could just fight back and attempt to understand why they occur so that you have a better knowledge in dealing with them.
Skin spots affect nearly everyone at some time within their life. It’s irrelevant who you are as even the richest and most famous people can suffer from adult acne. Cameron Diaz, Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson are all A list celebrities who all have to deal with the fall out of persistent facial spots.
And these people have bucket loads of money with every imaginable treatment available at their disposal. This brings me on to another point. In all the years that I have suffered from Skin spots I have tried 100’s of treatments. Some worked better than others yet within just a few months or at best 6-7 months I was back to square one and the little beasts had reclaimed their territory with defiant force.
If you look at Acne treatments as a whole you will notice a common theme that they share. Nearly all treatments aim to treat Acne from the outside in. This is where I believe the problem begins.
Acne arises through complex changes in the skin and starts deep within the skin. Use a treatment that penetrates only the outer layers and you only treat the immediate problem. Get a treatment that attacks from within then I feel that this type of treatment will have more success in dealing with your Skin spots.
